When Blaming Yourself Isn't Enough
I guess after months of wearing them, the gas masks became like a hat or a coat.
You'd put it on before venturing out because you needed it, no hesitation whatsoever.
Same thing with the safety goggles. No one argued that they were, in fact, for our safety.

Sure, I doubted that you could die from just a lungful of air, of fresh air,
because, come on, it was safe yesterday, so why not today?
But that was before we all watched Adam, hooked up to a breathing apparatus,
(in the beginning, we joked about him being a cyborg; he laughed with us between coughing fits)
his lungs shredding with every breath until his voice disappeared,

This ring upon my finger
chokes my bone to the core
and starves my heart-
I ache for something real,
a sign that you will cherish me
always and forever.

you don't. at least,
not at first, not for you; you sit
in the back of the room and kind
of admire the way
their laugh shakes
their shoulders back and forth,
rhythmic mimicry found unrhyming, unrehearsed.
it's refreshing, you think.
and slowly maybe you realize that hey, they
aren't too bad looking and hey, you
kind of like the way their eyes
dart away if you catch them looking at you,
and hey.
you feel your heartbeat for the first
time in years.

you think you might like them.
kind of. maybe. you really don't know, but you
like to think you do

the gravedigger's whistles
I still hear you in
my bones.
Scraping and
scratching a song
against my veins,
keep digging into the blood
until it covers your face—
pierce thoroughly than
fingertips and nails
so I won't hear anymore

we are a primarily poetry group, and tend to stick to highlighting that type of literature. i'm sorry!
i want to say that we used to highlight contest winners in the featured, but it's been a year since i've really been active and have dealt much with it (i do apologize - i've been a horrible founder lately!). now that i've returned for good this time, i have plans to be more involved and do better at keeping folders like the featured one up-to-date. as a chance for member feedback, what would you like to see in the featured folder? contest winners? monthly artist features? i'd love to hear your ideas! this is a group meant for its members benefit, so i'd like to incorporate any feedback on how to improve.
thanks so much for the questions and i hope you have a wonderful day!
thanks for the reply! hmm i think the featured folder should be for contest winners, but if that is too hard (to have like weekly or monthly contests) then i guess it should be random! and maybe change every day!! might be a stupid idea but just saying~ have a great day yourself, founder £:> glad to see there is hope for this group~
